Our paediatricians collaborate with specialists in team-based discussions to determine the best treatment for patients.
Through our partnership with the Adult Congenital and Structural Heart Disease programme, we ensure a seamless transition to lifelong cardiac care for paediatric patients. For treatment for Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD), we coordinate with experts at the National University Heart Centre Singapore to share essential patient information.
Outpatient Services
Our outpatient consultations include thorough cardiac evaluations by paediatric cardiologists for conditions such as heart murmurs, palpitations, chest pain or fainting.
We support our diagnostics with a comprehensive suite of non-invasive tests, including:
- Echocardiography (Transthoracic and Transesophageal)
- 12-lead Electrocardiogram (ECG)
- Continuous ambulatory 24-hour Holter ECG monitoring
- Exercise stress test
- Cardiopulmonary exercise testing
- 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM)
Sedation may be provided for young children who need assistance remaining still during these procedures.
Foetal Heart ProgrammeOur Foetal Heart Programme provides outpatient foetal echocardiograms to detect potential heart abnormalities. Pregnant women with certain risk factors or an abnormal foetal scan may be referred to us by their obstetrician.
Foetal echocardiograms are ideally performed between 18 and 22 weeks of gestation. Following the assessment, a paediatric foetal cardiology specialist will offer guidance on results and management options. Repeat evaluations or consultations with paediatric cardiothoracic surgeons may be recommended for further discussion on surgical interventions.
Inpatient ServicesOur Paediatric Intensive Care and High Dependency units provide specialised care for infants and children in critical phases treatment, including extracorporeal circulatory support with Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) therapy for severe heart and respiratory failure.
Additionally, our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit manages premature and full-term babies with congenital heart disease pre- and post-operatively.
Paediatric Cardiac Catheterisation
Cardiac catheterisation, a minimally invasive diagnostic and treatment approach, involves guiding a catheter to the heart via a vein or artery. This procedure not only helps in diagnosing heart defects and assessing their severity but also allows for the repair of certain heart conditions without the need for more invasive surgery.
Procedures include:
- Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) Device Closure
- Angioplasty
- Balloon Atrial Septostomy
- Balloon Valvuloplasty of the Aortic and Pulmonary Valves
- Balloon Arterioplasty of Coarctation of Aorta or Distal Pulmonary Artery Stenosis (narrowing)
- Diagnostic Catheterisation
- Intravascular Stent Placement
- Patent Ductus Arteriosus Device or Coil Closure
- Percutaneous Valve Replacement
- Pulmonary Artery Dilation and Stent Placement
Cardiac Radiologic Imaging Services
Our services include advanced imaging techniques such as computed tomography (CT) scans, nuclear cardiology or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to generate detailed images of the heart.
Ancillary Services
Our approach to patient care extends beyond the medical aspect to include the physical, social and psychological facets of growth and development. We work closely with paediatricians across various specialties, psychologists specialising in speech and occupational therapy and allied health professionals from other units such as the Paediatric Feeding and Nutrition Clinic. This multidisciplinary approach ensures that every child receives holistic care.
Many of our adolescent patients are active members of Project Dreamcatchers and are supported by the NUH Children's Fund.
