Developmental Hip Dysplasia

It is an abnormal hip development that can lead to a dislocated hip if left untreated.

Risk factors include first-born females, family history and the breech position.

• It may be detected during routine screening of newborns, revealing a subluxate or dislocated hip.
  
• Older infants may have asymmetrical skin creases on the thigh
  
• Toddlers may walk with a painless limp.

• Dependent on the child's age:
  

  • From 0 - 6 months, a strap device (Pavlik Harness).
  • 6-12 months, a closed reduction of hip and cast under general anaesthesia.
  • 12-18 months, an open reduction of hip with cast.
  • 18-24 months, an open reduction of hip with pelvic bone realignment and cast.
